STAN CHAMBER JOURNALISM AWARD: "What Matter's Most"
“Strangers Like Me”
I want to know “Strangers Like Me”. As odd as that sounds it’s what matters most to me. When I mean “Strangers Like Me”, I am referring to people. Though we all seem different, we all have the same fears, aspirations, and obstacles to go through to get what we want. I enjoy trying to find out the core of a person and how they work. Knowing matters most to me because though we may all portray a certain personality, that might not be who we really are. If you look at a girl who was always laughing and has a smile on her face, you wouldn’t know that her grandparents, and friend have past away all in a one month period. People think it’s best to let them deal with it on their own but you always think that someone will care enough to ask. You just never know.

Wings for Wheels: The Making of Born to Run
This video clip is about Bruce Springsteen and his band from when they were young trying to create a new sound. And they did that, making his band famous in the 70's. You see how the making of the album Born to Run really happened. And how it was everything but easy and fast. If you listen to his songs and really paid attention to the beats, it's as if he created a new instrument by putting and orchestra on the track with his special guitar, amazing drummers and etc... When he creates a song, the person listening to it will know how much work he put into it which is more than it would for a today singer to create an entire album. He has the ear that picks the littlest things to change but in the end make a huge difference. I will attempt to try to make my video show show the minor details that make a huge difference.

Personal Narrative- Poetic Lcense: Seeing The World Through Multiple Lenses - My LA
Word Count :211
Los Angeles is unseen from my eyes. Though I live in Los Angeles all my life. I haven’t really seen that much of it. The main places I go to are Granada Hills, Northridge, Porter Ranch and the Topanga Mall. When I go outside I see the San Fernando Valley Suburbia. We are far enough from the city to be able to see the thick layer of pollution but close enough to escape suburbia. Los Angeles is a place of Adults not kids. It’s where the celebrities go out and party till 2’ in the morning just because they can. And where the show “The Hills” takes place. I also know it as the place where all the music hear on the radio is made and movie I watch are created. If you don’t have a car that means you have no life. And that’s my situation, I can sometimes go around in a car but I now mainly take the bus. I feel trapped in this valley I call my home. It may be safe to around at night but sometimes it’s just too quiet. Los Angeles doesn’t really know me that much, and I don’t really know L.A. My relationship with L.A is strictly for Home, School, and the Doctors.

"God's Close-Up," This American Life (2007)
Tattoos everywhere, has a beard and kind of a Red neck but when you see his artwork you don't see that you see a master piece. This man has a raw talent to catch the emotions and passion that happened thousands of years ago. He became known when he painted a portrait of God combining 4 faces of males with beards. He went on to creating portraits with Jesus. He would go around town looking for his "Jesus" and "Apostles" and these men usually didn't have money or a home to go to at night. When he found his "Jesus" his real girlfriend was not happy with him being "Jesus" because she was atheist in a very religious family. And didn't want to be around religion even if its just a painting. And Ironically her father bought the Painting of "The Last Supper". She does admire his talent but just wish her boyfriend didn't have to be involved with this religious painting.
"Echo Park Avenue"in The Bus: Cosmic Ejaculations of the Daly Mind in Transit - Steve Abee
Steve Abee writes in 1st person when describing the bus ride he was on and everything that was happening inside and outside the bus is great detail. When the details go into extreme specifics, you get a sense that the author is analytical of his surroundings and never leaves anything undescribed. Talks about the people he meets with when he goes to Echo Park like his old student from two years ago, Karina. And talks about how the city he lives in is extremely over populated with not just legal immigrants but illegal.

There is also a Fourteen year old boy who does not believe and won't take part in Love. He doesn't even say "I Love You" to his mother that's how insistent he is. Though before he would get mad when his mother says it to him but now he is lenient with that but nothing else. He doesn't like how it makes everyone become different. "The Depth of Depp" in Red - Grace Habegger
Summary: This is an inside story of someone who has an obsession with a star. They tend to create a fictional personality to make the person more real to them and have them connect on a much deeper level then they would have have. This story is specifically about Grace Habegger who is 16 year old girl and has an obsession with Johnny Depp. Johnny Depp is her greatest inspiration. Her dream is to meet and perform with him in real life. .
Connection to making a Video: This would be somewhat more of a Documentary but could be made into a video. Her going to every premiere of his movies, and basically stalking him and trying to get in the same movie with him so she will be able to achieve her dream of meeting and working with him.

"Appeal From an Angry Not So Emo in Red: The Next Generation of American Writers-Teenage Girls-On What Fires Up Their Lives Today - Kali Moriarty h
Summary: Kali and her group of friends are labeled "Emos" though they doesn't think that they should be labeled something they are not. They are harassed and made fun of in the school hallways and on the internet. Kali wonders if the school does not do anything about this harassment then does that mean the school condones this behavior. She compares this ignorance to World War 2 and how everyone ignored Hitler taking countries over like Poland then started a Holocaust cause no one went to the defense of the one being bullied.
Connection to making a Video : This connects to film because she is telling her story and comparing to history and that would make great dialog and voice over in a movie comparing High Schools ignoring bullies to World War 2 with everyone ignoring Germany before the Holocaust. She could also make the Bullies look like Hitler to add a comic relief to the movie.

"The Road Warrior," The O.C. (2006)
In the little clip we as a class saw of the OC we learned what a voice over was. And it's when the audience hears the character is talking but its usually there thoughts. And it creates a better understanding of the character and their role. With Summer, you see how she talks about living in Orange County and how they are handed everything but its still hard to choose and then you see her choose between which bikini to wear the day when she goes out with her best friend Marissa, Ryan, and Seth her Boyfriend.

The Little Missing Pieces
When I was little I loved Puzzle because unlike life it has all the pieces and you can look at what it suppose to look like and make the frame and just guess and check when putting the puzzle together. I think my life is pretty simple my if it just had my after school activities cause it would be a puzzle of a tv, a computer, and a notebook for homework. If you took everything from my life my jigsaw puzzle would be made of billions of little jigsaw pieces. I am also happy to do a jigsaw puzzle cause it’s a challenge that I can succeed in and no one can doubt my reason cause once the pieces fit that’s it, it is now a part of a bigger picture. I barely have any of the pieces I need at the moment and I’m just working with what I have. When I’m missing a piece to the puzzle I feel like I’m incapable of doing anything like what’s the point of a puzzle if you don’t finish it. And when I come across a puzzle it makes me feel like something in this world actually does have a happy ending. I mean you can never truly understand a person if you are missing a puzzle and that’s me, I’m a puzzle that has little pieces missing to truly defines me. I have yet to find them.

"What Truthiness Taught Me About being (Un)Cool" in Red: The Next American Write - Teenage Girls - On What Fires Up Their Lives Today - Sarah Schelde
Summary: Sarah Schelde is 14 and is not your average teenage girl. She is interested in twisted humor by Stephen Colbert and embraces her oddness when compared to other girls her age who watch Laguna Beach and do things that MTV and the magazines think is cool. She knows that this is not it for her life, she will continue her pursuit to go to a good coolege and have job and hopefully one day meet Stephen Colbert.
Connection to Making a Video: Sarah makes an interesting point on how many girls base there life choices on a TV show and magazines created by older women. This would make a good video because you could instead get the perspective of the "outsider" looking in on the "robots" acting as if they were any different from their friends. And instead of have the outsider become one of them but embracing her weirdness and being her not a blond, rich girl from Laguna Beach.
